Dr Belton will analyze data from the Deep Impact mission with the object of
understanding the spin state of the comet nucleus. This will build on work
already started in a preliminary way during the Deep Impact mission.
Dr Belton will test the assumption that the spin state is fully relaxed and
how well outbursts can be related to specific geographic locations on the
surface of the comet nucleus. In the first year the work will focus on the
spin state itself. In the second year the relationship of outburst timing
to the rotational phase will be established. In the third year the morphology
of the outbursts as seen by remote observers will be folded into the picture
and a complete description of the outburst phenomenon achieved.
